It is very emotional to move into your childhood home, and when we were approached by our clients, he was quite sure about the project, having very fond memories of the house, while she was sceptical at first. The floor plans didn't really match their way of living, and everything seemed a little dated to her.

We regrouped rooms on all four floors, making way for a big kitchen with a large island — or rather peninsula — a breakfast nook[which is also the weekday lunch and dinner spot, and a pantry area concealed behind pocket doors.
The family room connects the kitchen and the dining area, serving as a communal centre where everyone can find their own space while still being together.

The dining table seats fourteen and is a family heirloom, cherished and surely in use for generations to come. The dining room connects to another sitting area, offering space for welcome drinks and mid-dinner rest.

One of the biggest transformations the house underwent was the renovation of the main staircase. It was a structure of white-painted wood and glass with shag carpet, very 80s cosy, and we wanted something more elegant. We traded the glass for wood and painted everything in the same warm white as the walls, just a nuance more gloss.

On the second floor, we turned two children's bedrooms into three and reconfigured the former primary bath for the children to share, including a vanity with three sinks.

On the small mezzanine to the primary suite, we integrated storage for evening wear; further up, the bedroom was flanked by more storage, to keep it as clutter-free as possible. The connecting bath has a tiny balcony overlooking the backyard. Up there after a long day, she likes it now.
